Welcome! You have reached the official home page of
the Colorado State Defense Force (Provisional), the "Rocky Mountain
Minutemen." This web site is presented as a public service and as an educational
activity intended to provide the general public with information about the
history, mission, and organization of the Colorado State Defense Force and
the Colorado State Defense Force
(Provisional). Also, it is intended as an official means of
communicating with the men and women of the Colorado State Defense Force
(Provisional), and for recruiting, troop morale, and retention purposes. The Colorado State Defense Force (Provisional) is not an anti-government group which styles itself as a "militia". The men and women of the Colorado State Defense Force (Provisional) are your friends, neighbors, and the people of your community. Within strict constitutional and statutory guidelines, the members of the Colorado State Defense Force (Provisional) are dedicated to supporting increased efforts to improve Colorado's homeland security and emergency preparedness capabilities at the state and local level. Additionally, the members of the Colorado State Defense Force (Provisional) seek to reintroduce Coloradans to the all American concepts of rugged individualism, self-reliance, and taking responsibility for their own state and local homeland security.
The Colorado State Defense Force (Provisional) is an important link in the
unbroken chain of community, state, and national homeland defense which
was first forged on December 13, 1636 when the General Court of the
Massachusetts Bay Colony ordered the organization of the Colony's separate
community militia companies into three regiments: The North, South, and
East Regiments.
The colonists adopted the English militia system which obligated all
males, between the ages of 16 and 60, to possess arms and participate in
the defense of the community as the uniquely American tradition of the all
volunteer militia; the citizen soldier.
On July 4, 1776, our nation was founded on the principle of individual
Americans joining together to defend themselves under the time honored
state militia system. When the Revolutionary War was finally won, the concept of the state
militia system was incorporated into our Constitution.
The Colorado State
Defense Force (Provisional)
is a bona fide, grassroots, all volunteer, uniformed, trained,
disciplined, and armed patriotic public service civic organization
dedicated to all hazards emergency preparedness. The Colorado
State Defense Force (Provisional) is acting as the interim State Defense Force authorized by the
United States Code, Title 32, Section 109, et seq.,
the Colorado Constitution, Article II, Section 13, and
Article XVII,
and
the
Colorado State Defense Force Act, Colorado Revised Statutes,
Article 4, Title 28, Section 28-4-101,
et seq.
These laws authorize the State of Colorado to maintain a uniformed, trained, disciplined, and armed State Defense Force as a non-federally recognized, but officially sanctioned component of the military forces of the State of Colorado separate and apart from the National Guard. Unlike the federally recognized National Guard, which is a Reserve Component of the United States Army with a foreign war making mission, and which is merely on loan to the state, the Colorado State Defense Force is under the command and control of the Governor and is to be used exclusively within the state. When called into service (State Defense Force Active Duty) by order of the Governor, the Colorado State Defense Force is assigned to the Department of Military Affairs under the jurisdiction of the Adjutant General to be employed in a constabulary role to support state and local civil authority. In Colorado, the state militia system has proven its worth time and again. During the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, Mexican Border Service, WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War, the volunteers of the state militia, which was known as the Colorado State Defense Force, served with distinction. Unfortunately, in 1998, with the end of the Cold War and the break-up of the Soviet Union, and a fear of any organization known as a 'militia', complacency, negligence, and political correctness overcame caution, common sense, and vigilance and the officially recognized Colorado State Defense Force was unlawfully terminated in violation of the Colorado State Defense Force Act, Colorado Revised Statutes, Article 4, Title 28, Section 28-4-101, et seq. as it was then written. As a consequence of the state's illegal action, a group of concerned citizen patriots stepped forward to establish three entities: The Colorado State Defense Force Association to lobby the Governor, the Adjutant General and the Military Department, and the General Assembly to restore and reactivate the Colorado State Defense Force; the Colorado State Defense Force Foundation to educate the general public about the existence, history, purpose, and need for the Colorado State Defense Force; and the Colorado State Defense Force (Provisional) to act as a grassroots volunteer field force in place of and until such time as the state can be persuaded to restore and reactivate the "officially recognized" Colorado State Defense Force. In this interim, the Colorado State Defense Force (Provisional) serves as a component of the "well regulated Militia" provided for in the United States Constitution, Article I, Section 8, Clause 16 and the Bill of Rights, Amendment II, and of the "unorganized militia" as defined in United States Code, Title 10, Section 311, et seq.
The mission of the Colorado State Defense Force (Provisional) is to:
protect life and property, and preserve peace, order, and public safety in Colorado.
All Colorado State Defense Force (Provisional) members
take an oath of allegiance to the United States of America and the State
of Colorado, and to obey the orders of the Governor of the State of
Colorado and the officers appointed over them.
Members agree to serve for a
period of not less than one year and to perform not less than 100 hours of
annual volunteer service.
